Board Report for the Oct. 31, 2018, Meeting of the CF District Board of Trustees

RECOGNITION
■ Dr. Jim Henningsen presented Chairman Bill Edgar with a plaque in honor of his service as board chair this year.
■ Dr. Mark Paugh, vice president of Academic Affairs, introduced Natascha Kehri, one of the students honored with the Commissioner’s Leadership Award at the State Board of Education meeting held Oct. 25 in Crystal River. Kehri is a student in the Bachelor of Applied Science in Business and Organizational Management program at the Ocala Campus and will graduate in December. C.J. Adams was also recognized at the Oct. 25 event, but was unable to attend the board meeting. Adams is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program at the Citrus Campus and is completing prerequisites for the nursing program.
■ Dr. Saul Reyes, vice president of Student Affairs, Marissa Brown, Admissions and School Relations specialist, and Marjorie McGee, director of Student Life, introduced student leaders to the board. The 2018-2019 Ocala Student Ambassadors are Michael Bass, Andy Diaz, Alexandra Farrell, Jackson Goldman, Katy Shutters and Ashley Tucker, who was not present. The 2018-2019 Ocala Student Activities Board members are Alisson Diaz, Amaya Knight, Jada Moody, Kervin Scotland, Sade Teel, Deonte Smith, and Emmirial Griner, who was not present.
■ Dr. Jillian Ramsammy, vice president of Institutional Effectiveness and College Relations, and Cindi Morrison, director of the Appleton Museum, shared that proclamations celebrating Arthur I. Appleton for his service to the community were presented at Oct. 4 meetings of the Marion County Commission and Ocala City Council. The museum celebrated Appleton’s birthday with free admission on Oct. 14 and more than 330 people visited that day.

PRESENTATION
Dr. Tammi Viviano-Broderick, dean of E-Learning & Learning Resources, presented a 2018-2019 program update, which she said is all about providing access for students. The college currently offers 17 degrees and certifications 100 percent online, and 35 additional programs are partially available online. A hybrid of classroom and online instruction is the preferred method for students.

THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES:
■ Approved an agreement between OnLine Training Inc. and CF, creating a partnership for CF Corporate College to resell online insurance courses for prelicensing and continuing education credits.
■ Approved an agreement between University of North Florida and CF, creating a partnership for CF Corporate College to offer business-related courses in conjunction with the Florida Small Business Development Center.
■ Reviewed the first reading of Board Policy 1.00 regarding the mission and vision of the college.
■ Held a public hearing for Board Policy 3.14 regarding memberships/political activities.
■ Held a public hearing for Board Policy 4.01 regarding textbook adoption and affordability.
■ Acknowledged receipt of the Monthly Financial Summary Report and List of Warrants.
■ Received a Resource Development Department Annual Report for 2017-2018 from Matt Matthews, director of Resource Development. & Accreditation. During the fiscal year, 32 grant applications were submitted. Of those, 13 new and two continuing grants totaling $2,632,153 were awarded to CF. Additionally, eight opportunities were researched, but did not move forward. Three grant applications have been submitted during the current fiscal year.
■ Received an analysis of student loan debt from Dr. Saul Reyes, vice president of Student Affairs. During the 2017-2018 aid year, 23 percent of enrolled students received loans. An impressive 76 percent of CF students graduated with no loan debt.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT
 CF students Natascha Kehri and C.J. Adams were honored with the Commissioner’s Leadership Award at the State Board of Education meeting held on Oct. 25 in Crystal River.
■ Health Sciences news:
 On Nov. 8, the Associate Degree Nursing program will celebrate its 55th Anniversary with an open house. The event will be held in the Health Sciences Simulation Center and celebrate the history of CF Nursing.
 On Nov. 13, the Health Sciences Division is partnering with the Talent Center and CareerSource Citrus Levy Marion for the second annual Health Sciences Job Fair. The event is open to current students and experienced health care professionals seeking careers in the medical field.
 The college and CF Foundation are sponsoring the Great 100 Nurses of Marion County, along with Florida Hospital Ocala and Ocala Health System. The event will feature keynote speaker and CF nursing alumnus Dr. Rose Rivers, former Chief Nursing Officer of University of Florida Health Shands Hospital. Six nursing faculty members will receive this honor: Associate Professor Deborah Becker, Associate Professor Cathy McDonough, Associate Professor Fran Sciotto, Associate Professor Melissa Tolbert, Part-time Instructor Angelia Marrero, and Part-time Instructor Tania Meridith.
 Associate Professor Fran Sciotto, Associate Professor Melissa Tolbert, Associate Professor Loraine Zarillo, and Part-time Instructor Angelia Marrero attended the NurseTim New Faculty Institute in Orlando, Oct. 26-28.
 The Health Sciences Division will collaborate with Criminal Justice on Nov. 1 for a disaster simulation. The annual event helps prepare students for the role of responding to a disaster situation and to gain experience in working with members of the interdisciplinary team.
■ CF Teacher Education and the CF Learning Lab School partnered with the Early Learning Coalition of Marion County to host the Second Annual Fall in Love with Reading literacy event on campus Oct. 13. Approximately 300 families participated in literacy activities. Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education students partnered with community organizations and other vendors to host individual stations reflecting different classic children’s books.
■ On Sept. 27, the Title III Grant federal program officer announced a supplemental award for year three in the amount of $127,600. This is year three of the five-year, $2.1 million grant for our StartSmart initiative. The supplemental award will enhance students’ first-year experience through a speaker series and one-read to enhance student orientation and address the federal priorities of financial literacy, free speech, and citizenship and civic engagement. Local judicial, business, and socially active community members as well as nationally recognized leaders in each of these areas will be participating to create a meaningful collegewide project that will support the grant’s primary goal of StartSmart: Enhancing the First-Year Experience. Students will connect this series to their classroom learning in the first-year seminar course. The StartSmart core team, Karla Wilson, Dr. James Meier, Lois Kohlweiss, Jamie Clinton and Dr. Tammi Viviano-Broderick, will implement these additional activities through Sept 30, 2019.
■ Oct. 1-5 was National Tutoring Week. The Learning Support Center invited students, faculty and staff to stop by the LSC to thank tutors and enjoy some sweets. More than 75 students, faculty and staff took time to thank our tutors and LSC staff.
■ Dr. Vernon Lawter, vice president of Regional Campuses, has been reappointed to serve a three-year term on the board of directors for United Way of Citrus County. The Ocala Campus United Way campaign is underway, and will close Nov. 16. A thank you reception for employees who have pledged is scheduled for Nov. 28 in the Webber Center.
■ A CF team supported the American Heart Association Heart Walk in Marion County on Oct. 6. A total of $4,511 was raised in support of the campaign. In addition, the Marketing and Public Relations team set up a CF information booth along the walking trail.
■ Approximately 60 Citrus Campus students attended the Student Resource Fair on Oct. 24. Representatives from 20 programs and organizations provided information on job placement, fitness, financial assistance, mental health, disability services, academic assistance, CF performing arts events and alumni services. Workshops were presented by Dr. Henri Benlolo and BayCare’s Jacqui Turner. Students received free massages, lunch and prizes. Student Life and TRiO Educational Opportunity Center partnered for this event.
■ The Association of Community College Trustees Annual Leadership Congress was held in New York City in October. A special thanks to Chair Rusty Branson for attending the conference with Dr. Henningsen. They participated in the pre-program workshop, “The Chair’s Academy,” and attended additional sessions throughout the conference.
■ Foundation Update:
 Clay Electric gifted $10,000 to the Patriot Fund (student emergency assistance fund) from its Round Up program.
 Final distribution of an estate was received in the amount of $197,389 for the benefit of the Appleton Museum of Art, allowing the naming of one of the galleries.
 A $100,000 stock gift was made to an existing endowed scholarship.
 College Square Apartments are at 100 percent occupancy.
 The President’s Circle mailings have been sent. This is a new giving club to replace the President’s Community Council.
 The Asokan Family Scholarship has been established.
 The Alumni Association is accepting Distinguished Alumni nominations through Oct. 31.
 On Oct. 22, the Alumni Association hosted MEGA Monday with a panel of three guest speakers representing education and business/marketing fields.
■ On Oct. 8, Chair Rusty Branson and Dr. Henningsen hosted Ocala Health CEO Chad Christianson and updated him on CF Health Sciences programs and plans, and toured our state-of-the-art Health Sciences Simulation Center.
■ On Oct. 17, Doug Cone, CEO of Cone Distributing, shared his business success story with a packed house of our business students in the Klein Center.
■ Performing Arts:
 On Sept. 25, CF Visual and Performing Arts hosted another successful Arts College Transfer Fair at the Ocala Campus with 13 universities representing their limited-admission arts programs. This event helps existing CF students transfer more efficiently, and demonstrates the potential 2+2 pathway for prospective CF Visual and Performing Arts students. CF’s partnership with (F)actor Theater allows regional high school theatre faculty to continue to practice their craft and share it with their own students.
 On Sept. 25, (F)actor Theater performed “The Humans” by Stephen Karam for an audience of approximately 200 high school students and 50 CF students. Students in attendance received a free copy of the play.
 On Oct. 28, the CF Patriot Blues Jazz Band performed for the community twice in one day. First, at the Fine Arts For Ocala art festival in downtown Ocala, and then later at Silver Springs State Park, as part of the Friends of Silver Springs fundraising event.

■ Marketing and Public Relations:
 The 2017-2018 CF Annual Report is ready for distribution. The plan highlights our successes through the lens of our 2013-2018 strategic plan.
 Marketing and Public Relations earned four Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. The team earned a Gold Award for the 60th Anniversary Annual Report poster; a Silver Award for Connection Magazine; and two Bronze Awards, for print advertising and Interior Signage/Display for a Suicide Myths retractor. The awards recognize outstanding achievement in design and communication at community and technical colleges.
 CF was named Best Local College in the Ocala Star Banner’s annual Best of the Best Awards. The Appleton Museum of Art received Best of the Best Honors in five categories: Best Museum, Best Local Tourist Attraction, Best Art Nonprofit/Charity, Best Family Amusement and Best Wedding Venue.
 Dr. Rob Wolf shared insights on the value of higher education, laddering of credentials, and CF’s partnerships with our area businesses and school districts on WOCA radio on Oct. 24.
 CF hosted Leadership Ocala/Marion Class XXXII at Vintage Farm Campus on Oct. 9. Dr. Henningsen talked with participants about the value and return on investment of higher education and shared a behind-the-scenes tour of the farm. LOM is a project of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber and Economic Partnership.
 The Marketing and Public Relations team will host a Shop Talk Cancer Awareness program on lung cancer and vaping during MEGA Monday Nov. 5. This is the first Shop Talk program presented specifically for students. The program is funded by the Ocala Royal Dames for Cancer Research Inc.
 The Friday Talks Business Advancement Series on Oct. 26 featured Dr. Cynthia Moody, CF associate professor of Business and Technology. Moody presented “Soft Skills and Why They Matter” to more than 50 members and guests of the Ocala/Marion County Chamber and Economic Partnership.
■ Athletics news: Volleyball has qualified for the eighth consecutive year for the state/district championship to be held in Bradenton beginning Nov. 2. The Lady Pats will open against two-time defending national champion and current National Junior College Athletic Association No. 1 Miami-Dade. Baseball had three players selected to the State All-Star Fall Game that was held in Lakeland. Representing CF were Codie Lunday from Belleview, Ricky Presno from Pembroke Pines, and Zachary West from Palm Beach Gardens. Men’s and women’s basketball have completed their October scrimmage schedule and will open the regular season at home Nov. 2.
■ Appleton Museum of Art:
 “La Diaspora: Keepers of Heritage,” through Jan. 20, features the work of 12 contemporary Puerto Rican artists who are members of the Puerto Rican Arts Diaspora Orlando, an artist’s collective.
 The “Flourish” exhibit, through Jan. 13, features flower-like, sea anemone earthenware forms by award-winning Florida artist Beth Garcia.
 “Myth, Mother, Muse: The Paintings of Matthew Bennett,” through Jan. 27, features the work of Bennett, a Jacksonville artist who uses saturated colors and loose brush strokes to emphasize emotional connections.
 On Sept. 22, 342 people attended the annual Smithsonian Museum Day event. Participating national museums provided free admission to encourage people to visit their museums.
 On Sept. 26, 43 Florida Art Educators participated in a daylong conference at the Appleton organized by CF’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. Museum Educator Hollis Mutch and Curator of Exhibitions Patricia Tomlinson presented talks on Visual Thinking Strategies and provided tours of the museum’s galleries and education classrooms.
 On Oct. 6, Carmen Rojas-Gines, a local artist participating in the “La Diaspora” exhibit, presented a sculptural art-making activity for more than 50 children and adults for First Saturday.
 Oct. 27-28, more than 1,100 people visited the museum’s booth and art making activity during the Fine Arts For Ocala art fair.
 On Sept. 23, 117 people attended the Inspired Speaker Series event featuring John Eblen, an internationally known model maker.
 On Oct. 6, 265 people visited the museum’s booth at the First Friday Art Walk.
 On Oct. 14, the museum celebrated Arthur I. Appleton’s birthday with free admission. More than 330 people visited the museum and created art in the ARTSpace.
 On Oct. 4, proclamations thanking Arthur I. Appleton for his service to the community were presented at meetings of the Marion County Commission and Ocala City Council.
 On Oct. 21, more than 70 people attended the Inspired Speaker Series event featuring Jill Sonke, who spoke about the University of Florida Center for the Arts in Medicine and UF Health Arts in Medicine.

The next meeting of the District Board of Trustees will be held Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018, at 3 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art.
