Ira Holmes International Film Series Starts Jan. 25

January 25, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Ira Holmes

The CF Ira Holmes International Film Series will kick off Jan. 25 with “Cléo from 5 to 7” and a reception honoring Professor Holmes.

In this 1962 film, Agnès Varda eloquently captures Paris in the ’60s with this real-time portrait of a singer (Corinne Marchand) set adrift in the city as she awaits test results of a biopsy. A chronicle of the minutes of one woman’s life, “Cléo from 5 to 7” is a spirited mix of vivid vérité and melodrama, featuring a score by Michel Legrand (“The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”) and cameos by Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina.

The film will be shown at 2 p.m. at the Appleton Museum of Art, and at 7 p.m., at the CF Ocala Campus.

Films at the Appleton are free to all museum and film series members; nonmembers pay museum admission. Films may contain mature content.

Everyone is invited to the 60th Anniversary Kickoff Reception at 6 p.m. and Professor Holmes will introduce the film as a special guest at the 7 p.m. screening. The reception will be held outside the Humanities and Social Sciences Building 8, with coffee, snacks and chairs provided. The evening film screening will be held both inside Building 8, Room 110, and outside on the Building 8 west side wall.

On Wednesday, Jan. 26, Dr. Rebecca J. DeRoo, author of “Agnès Varda between Film, Photography, and Art,” will host an online film talk and question and answer session at 12:30 p.m. via Zoom.
