VPA Presents ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,’ April 6-8

CF’s Visual Performing Arts department and Musical Theatre presents “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” Friday and Saturday, April 6-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 8, at 3 p.m. at the Dassance Fine Arts Center. Tickets are free for CF students, faculty and staff. $12 for adults, non-CF students $6.

This comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and book by Rachel Sheinkin is centered on a fictional spelling bee in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the bee, run by three equally quirky adults. This interactive performance will get the audience participating and laughing at the same time.

The show is directed by Jason Longtin, associate music professor and director of vocal music at CF. He taught vocal music in Florida from 1999-2013. Choirs under his direction have performed throughout the United States, Italy and Switzerland. He has conducted and directed numerous musical theatre productions throughout central Florida and is the 2017-2018 recipient of the University of Florida David L. Wilmot Music Education Award. He has a bachelor of music education with honor from Stetson University; a master in music education from the University of Florida and is currently pursuing a doctorate in music education at UF.
