SUMMARY:“The Art Nouveau Posters of Alphonse Mucha” Exhibition Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join us online on Sunday\, Dec. 12\, at 2 p.m. for a free online talk about Alphonse Mucha and his iconic posters. The talk will be hosted by Angelina Lippert\, chief curator of Poster House in New York City. Poster House is the first museum in the United States dedicated exclusively to posters. There is no fee or registration required to attend. \nMeeting ID: 939 8382 6915 \nPasscode: 011181 \n“Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau\,” is on view at the Appleton Museum of Art Nov. 6\, 2021-Jan. 9\, 2022. \nCulled from the Dhawan Collection\, Los Angeles\, CA\, one of the finest private collections of Mucha’s work in the United States\, the exhibition presents 75 works by Mucha\, who is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century. \nIncluded in the exhibition are rare original lithographs and proofs\, an oil painting\, drawings\, a pastel\, and books\, posters\, portfolios and ephemera. The exhibition is curated by esteemed art historian\, Gabriel Weisberg\, Professor of Art History\, University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities\, who has provided an essay for the exhibition catalogue. Weisberg writes\, “In 1900\, when the widely distributed French periodical Art et Décoration published a long and exhaustive article on the work of Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939)\, the Czechoslovakian artist was at the pinnacle of his creative powers. Varied\, expressive\, and seductive\, his works were given the name “the Mucha style”; later the style was identified as “Art Nouveau.” \nMucha’s successes in many fields of creativity are revealed in the exhibition\, dedicated to the broad range of his work. Organized in three sections — posters\, book and journal illustrations and The Slav Epic — the exhibition focuses on the ways Mucha revitalized an interest in these media. It provides an opportunity to see how the different media\, clients and objectives reflect the time period in which the artist lived and worked. \n“Mucha’s ability to understand the major creative themes of the day\, to use them in the most original ways possible\, and to create works of art that remain seductive for future generations\, is truly his great triumph\,” writes Weisberg. With objects drawn from the extensive Dhawan Collection\, and with the publication of this catalogue\, the exhibition provides a new\, original way of seeing one of the most prolific creators of fin-de-siècle imagery. \nThe exhibition and museum tour were organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions\, Los Angeles\, CA.

SUMMARY:"Heart of the Horse" Artist’s Outlook Online Talk
DESCRIPTION:Join Patricia Tomlinson\, Curator of Exhibitions\, and Juliet van Otteren for a free talk at 7 p.m. on Thursday\, Nov. 18\, on Zoom to discuss “Heart of the Horse: Photographs by Juliet van Otteren\,” the artist’s work\, inspirations\, and more. \nMeeting ID: 302 190 0088\nPasscode: 352352 \n“Heart of the Horse: Photographs by Juliet van Otteren” is on view Oct. 9\, 2021-Apr. 24\, 2022. The 40 black and white photographs of horses reflect the beauty and complexity of these exquisite animals. \nInternationally acclaimed photographer Juliet van Otteren’s photographs seek more than the simple documentation of beautiful horses. Rather\, her black and white images strive to capture their essence\, perhaps even a glimpse into their souls. By spending significant time with a limited number of equine subjects\, van Otteren is able to forge an intimate connection that captures their grace\, close familial relationships\, playfulness\, and their ancient bond with us as human beings. \nJuliet van Otteren began creating photographs when she lived in various communities in the Himalayas and the Middle East. After living in the serenity of the English countryside for many years\, van Otteren returned to the United States in the late 1990s and is now based in Florida. Her work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London\, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris\, among many others. Private collections include those of Gloria Vanderbilt\, William Kennedy\, Isabel Allende and Stephen Hawking. \nToday van Otteren continues to travel the world creating unique images. The accompanying catalog\, “Heart of the Horse\,” with texts by astrophysicist and author Alan Lightman and a foreword by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall\, was published by Barnes & Noble in 2004. The book will be available for purchase in the Appleton Store.

SUMMARY:"Heart of the Horse" Gallery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Visit the museum on Free First Saturday and take a tour of “Heart of the Horse” with Juliet van Otteren on Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. Both tour times are free for members and nonmembers as part of Free First Saturday. No registration required to attend. \n“Heart of the Horse: Photographs by Juliet van Otteren” is on view Oct.

SUMMARY:Appleton Book Club: “The Hare with Amber Eyes”
DESCRIPTION:The Appleton’s virtual book club meets once a month on Zoom to discuss works of nonfiction that have been hand-selected by Appleton staff. The September meeting will discuss “The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance” by Edmund de Waal. \nLed by Museum Educator Hollis Mutch\, the book club is open to everyone. Participation is free and easy! Buy or borrow the book and read at your own pace. Register for the Appleton Book Club meeting here on Eventbrite. Login details for the Zoom session will be sent in your confirmation email. \nAbout this book: \nEdmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. Having spent 30 years making beautiful pots―which are then sold\, collected\, and handed on―he has a particular sense of the secret lives of objects. When he inherited a collection of 264 tiny Japanese wood and ivory carvings\, called netsuke\, he wanted to know who had touched and held them\, and how the collection had managed to survive. \nAnd so begins this extraordinarily moving memoir and detective story as de Waal discovers both the story of the netsuke and of his family\, the Ephrussis\, over five generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna\, the Ephrussis were as rich and respected as the Rothchilds. Yet by the end of the World War II\, when the netsuke were hidden from the Nazis in Vienna\, this collection of very small carvings was all that remained of their vast empire.

DESCRIPTION:The Appleton Museum of Art\, College of Central Florida\, is pleased to announce “A Breeze Through Fertile Gardens: Drawings and Paintings by Andrew M. Grant\,” on view through Nov. 7. \nOn view in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists\, Grant’s paintings and drawings of the female form are inspired by the four elements; earth\, air\, fire and water. While there\, he gravitated to classes and workshops taught by Terry Norris\, who specialized in oil painting. Grant then relocated to study with Carol Broman\, and there he was introduced to more rigorous techniques of drawing and painting. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and solo exhibitions and currently teaches at Crealdé School of Art. He lives in Orlando with his wife and two children.
