SUMMARY:Appleton Book Club: “The Hare with Amber Eyes”
DESCRIPTION:The Appleton’s virtual book club meets once a month on Zoom to discuss works of nonfiction that have been hand-selected by Appleton staff. The September meeting will discuss “The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance” by Edmund de Waal. \nLed by Museum Educator Hollis Mutch\, the book club is open to everyone. Participation is free and easy! Buy or borrow the book and read at your own pace. Register for the Appleton Book Club meeting here on Eventbrite. Login details for the Zoom session will be sent in your confirmation email. \nAbout this book: \nEdmund de Waal is a world-famous ceramicist. Having spent 30 years making beautiful pots―which are then sold\, collected\, and handed on―he has a particular sense of the secret lives of objects. When he inherited a collection of 264 tiny Japanese wood and ivory carvings\, called netsuke\, he wanted to know who had touched and held them\, and how the collection had managed to survive. \nAnd so begins this extraordinarily moving memoir and detective story as de Waal discovers both the story of the netsuke and of his family\, the Ephrussis\, over five generations. A nineteenth-century banking dynasty in Paris and Vienna\, the Ephrussis were as rich and respected as the Rothchilds. Yet by the end of the World War II\, when the netsuke were hidden from the Nazis in Vienna\, this collection of very small carvings was all that remained of their vast empire.

DESCRIPTION:The Appleton Museum of Art\, College of Central Florida\, is pleased to announce “A Breeze Through Fertile Gardens: Drawings and Paintings by Andrew M. Grant\,” on view through Nov. 7. \nOn view in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists\, Grant’s paintings and drawings of the female form are inspired by the four elements; earth\, air\, fire and water. His representational works integrate surrealism\, myth and legend to depict women in meditative states that invite the viewer into the narrative. \nJoin Grant on Zoom Thursday\, Aug. 19\, at 7 p.m. for a free artist talk where he will discuss his work\, inspirations and journey as an artist. Meeting ID: 302 190 0088 | Passcode: 352352 \nAndrew Maurice Grant was born in Montego Bay\, Jamaica\, and migrated to the United States at an early age. While there\, he gravitated to classes and workshops taught by Terry Norris\, who specialized in oil painting. Grant then relocated to study with Carol Broman\, and there he was introduced to more rigorous techniques of drawing and painting. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions and solo exhibitions and currently teaches at Crealdé School of Art. He lives in Orlando with his wife and two children.

SUMMARY:Impressionist Paintings From Both Sides of the Atlantic Highlighted\, Nov. 2-Jan. 5
DESCRIPTION:The Appleton Museum of Art will present the exhibition “Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism Through the French Lens\,” Nov. 2\, 2019-Jan. 5\, 2020. \nThis extraordinary exhibition\, drawn mostly from the collection of the Reading Public Museum in Reading\, Pennsylvania\, explores the path to Impressionism through the 19th century in France. The show examines the sometimes complex relationship between French Impressionism of the 1870s and 1880s and the American interpretation of the style in the decades that followed. \nMore than 65 paintings and works on paper help tell the story of the “new style” of painting that developed at the end of the 19th century — one that emphasized light and atmospheric conditions\, rapid or loose brushstrokes\, and a focus on brightly colored scenes from everyday life\, including both urban and rural settings when artists preferred to paint outdoors and capture the changing effects of light during different times of day and seasons of the year. \n“Across the Atlantic” will also feature works by artists whose paintings helped pave the pathway to Impressionism such as members of the Barbizon School including Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and Narcisse Diaz de la Peña. Other French painters whose techniques and subjects paralleled those of the Impressionists like Charles-François Daubigny\, Leon-Augustin Lhermitte\, and Jean-Charles Cazin will also be examined. Many of these artists practiced painting outdoors\, en plein air\, a new freedom that the commercial availability of tubed paint and portable easels afforded them. \nSome of the key artists featured in the exhibition include Edgar Degas\, Mary Cassatt\, Victor Vignon\, Albert Lebourg\, among others\, who exhibited in the official Impressionist exhibitions in Paris in the 1870s and 1880s. Although familiar and beloved by modern audiences in their own time\, the Impressionists were thought of as a rather radical alternative to the traditions of academic painting. The progressive group of artists avoided the official\, state-funded Salon in Paris and instead decided to exhibit their works in unconventional displays. \nAmong the earliest American artists to embrace the style were John Singer Sargent\, William Merritt Chase\, John Henry Twachtman\, Willard Metcalf\, Childe Hassam and Frank W. Appleton. \nVisit the permanent collection and special exhibitions “Urban Chatter: Sharon Kerry-Harlan\,” “Do Not Bleach: Stephanie Brown\,” and “Florida Impressions: Relief Prints by Leslie Peebles.” Visit the new permanent exhibition in the auditorium\, “Artistic Legacy: The Story of Arthur I. This is also a great opportunity to take a stroll on the museum grounds and check out the outdoor sculpture collection. \nAbout Arthur I. Appleton: \nBorn in Chicago in 1915\, Arthur I. Appleton was the son of the founder of the Appleton Electric Company. He loved art and antiquities from an early age because his mother\, a concert pianist\, singer and collector of fine art\, instilled in her children her love of beautiful things. After graduating\nfrom Dartmouth College in 1936\, Arthur I. Appleton joined the family business\, which manufactured electrical products used in chemical and steel plants. He contributed many inventions to the electronics field\, acquiring more than 160 patents. Upon his retirement in 1982\, the business was sold to Emerson Electric. \nAppleton and his wife\, actress Martha O’Driscoll\, bought land in the Ocala area during the mid-1970s and established Bridlewood Farm\, a thoroughbred breeding and training facility. When Appleton realized Ocala was the perfect setting for a museum that would allow him to share his vast art collections with the public\, he hired Tampa architect Dwight Holmes to design the Appleton Museum of Art. The design was based on a sketch drawn by Appleton. Construction began on the 44 acres of land in 1984. The museum opened to the public in 1987\, winning the American Institute of Architects Florida Award for Excellence. Appleton passed away Jan. 15\, 2008\, at the age of 92. \nAdd to my calendar

SUMMARY:On View This Summer at the Appleton
DESCRIPTION:The Appleton Museum of Art will present two exhibitions this summer from June 8-Oct. 20\, “Do Not Bleach: Stephanie Brown” and “Urban Chatter: Sharon Kerry-Harlan.” \nExhibition Events\nOpening Reception and Spoken Word Showcase\nSaturday\, June 8\, 5–7 p.m.\nCelebrate with artist Stephanie Brown at the opening of “Do Not Bleach: Stephanie Brown” and “Urban Chatter: Sharon Kerry-Harlan” with a reception from 5-6 p.m. At 6 p.m. in the auditorium\, a spoken word showcase will feature performances on the topic of appearance. There is no fee to attend. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be provided. \nThrough a series of mixed media installations\, “Do Not Bleach” expresses and encourages melanin positivity\, whether one is dark-skinned\, light-skinned\, or somewhere in between. The exhibition will also feature a selfie interactive station\, where visitors are encouraged to try on one of Brown’s signature “Do Not Bleach” T-shirts and take a photo. Shirts will be available for purchase in the Appleton Store and are part of the artist’s public art campaign that allows people to advocate for their melanin. Other installations include “Soaps in Various Skin Tones\,” which references Fenty Beauty\, pop icon Rhianna’s cosmetics brand that is known for its inclusivity of all skin tones. \nThe youngest of five siblings\, Brown grew up a first-generation American in Delray Beach. Her parents are Jamaican immigrants. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from Savannah College of Art and Design and received her master’s degree in interdisciplinary arts and museum studies certificate from the University of Michigan. \nOn view at the same time\, “Urban Chatter” features the work of Sharon Kerry-Harlan. Using thread and sun-baked cloth\, “the density of contemporary city living\,” provides the inspiration for this series. The figures and faces seem to meld abstraction\, African sculptures and ritual masks among mid-century urban music references from the Harlem jazz scene. Born in Miami\, the artist splits her time between Wauwatosa\, Wisconsin\, and Hollywood\, Florida. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Marquette University and studied art at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Her body of work includes textiles\, mixed media and photography. \nAdd the reception to my calendar

SUMMARY:Arbor Day at the Appleton\, Jan. 31
DESCRIPTION:The Appleton Museum of Art\, will hold its annual Arbor Day celebration on Thursday\, Jan. 31. \nArbor Day is a holiday dedicated annually to public tree-planting and appreciation of natural resources. From January and February in the south\, all the way to May in the far north\, Arbor Day encourages tree-planting not only by groups and organizations\, but also individuals. \nFrom 11 a.m. to noon in the Appleton auditorium\, Greg Barton\, Marion County forester\, will give a presentation on the ecological value of trees. From noon to 1 p.m.\, docents will give a tour of flora-themed works and symbolism found throughout the permanent collection. The events are free for Appleton members; included with regular admission fee for nonmembers. \nThe Appleton’s permanent collection features a number of works featuring landscapes and nature created by members of a group of mid-19th century European artists known as the Barbizon school. These artists had become disenchanted with the formal style of painting and began to draw their inspiration directly from the natural world. \nThis event is organized by Steve MacKenzie\, professor of Environmental Sciences at CF. For more information\, contact Griselle Gonzalez at 352-291-4455\, ext. 1836\, or gonzaleg@cf.edu. \nAdd to my calendar
