February President’s Update

The CF Forensics team with Dr. Matthew Maddex, advisor, and awards earned at the Florida College System Activities Association Forensics State Championships.

Dear CF Team:

Thank you to all who have supported the CF Family Campaign. If you haven’t made a donation to support learning at CF, it’s not too late. In fact, it’s never too late!

We are working together to impact enrollment in some new and not-so-new ways. On Feb. 20, we will host Dare to Dream: Black Male Enrichment Conference. This inaugural event will bring about 200 young men and family members to the Ocala Campus to learn about education options and hear inspirational messages from successful role models. Dr. Lisa Smith and Dr. Mac McIntosh are leading a team of CF staff members in the project that is supported by a CF Foundation New Initiative Grant and the Appleton Museum of Art.

On Feb. 25, we begin our Preview Night series at the Ocala Campus. Levy is next with a daytime event on Saturday, Feb. 29, and Citrus Preview Night wraps up the series on March 12. We will also have a significant presence at the Southeastern Youth Fair this year. This favorite of Marion County youth is a great opportunity for us to showcase our Agribusiness and Equine Studies programs, as well as our Vintage Farm Campus. Thank you to team members who are representing the college at one or more of the events.

Our students continue to make us proud. The CF Forensics team brought home several awards from the Florida College System Activities Association Forensics State Championships at Tallahassee Community College last week (Feb. 7-8). The team earned Third Place Overall Team Sweeps and Second Place Individual Events Team Sweeps Readers Theatre State Champions. Student Eileen Hernandez was named State Champion in Programmed Oral Interpretation and Persuasion. She and other team members brought home numerous individual awards. Special thanks to Dr. Matthew Maddex, associate professor of Speech, for leading this team.

Student Life leader and Visual and Performing Arts student Dominique Gandiongco has been recognized for outstanding performance in music. She was chosen as one of two flutists in the state to perform on Dr. Troy Paolantonio’s Orchestral Excerpt Masterclass in January at the Florida Flute Association Convention; Paolantonio is a flutist in the U.S. Army Field Band. Dominique was also awarded winner of the Florida Flute Association’s Piccolo Masterclass Competition in November. Join me in giving thanks to Dr. Sarah Satterfield, VPA professor, for teaching Dominique.

Congratulations to our men’s basketball team for winning the Mid-Florida conference on Wednesday evening. Join me in giving thanks to Coach Tim Ryan and his assistants for their leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes.

We have an opportunity to support our community at the annual United Way Day of Caring, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 29. We will return to the Salvation Army’s Evangeline Booth Garden Apartments to help residents with light housekeeping, car washing, yard work and also enjoy fellowship. Please consider participating that day as we make a difference in our community. Contact Amanda Camp for more information and to volunteer: campa@cf.edu or extension 1902.
