Malicious actors are sending web links that install remote access software, enabling criminals to view your screen, steal information, or alter files. Please remain cautious with unexpected links and report suspicious emails using the Phish Alert Button (PAB) or by forwarding them as attachments to the Information Security Manager at griffisj@cf.edu.
Recently, someone posing as a student sent a web link claiming to contain admission transcripts. Thanks to the attention of our admissions and registration staff, it was promptly reported to Information Technology.
Using sandbox technology to ensure safety, we found the link ran a Visual Basic script to install a widely used remote desktop software. Its popularity could have made it easy to overlook.
Our diligent staff prevented this attempt, but future threats may appear in different forms. Please remain vigilant, and thank you for your continued efforts to protect our institution. For context, the industry average for educational institutions with over 1,000 employees interacting with phishing emails is 5.5%. At CF, our average is 1.8%. Your impact is significant and greatly appreciated.
