EAP Offers Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Webinars

This month’s free Employee Assistance Program webinars focus on intimate partner violence awareness. Many people know that intimate partner violence (also called domestic violence) is a concern, but they might not understand the full scope of the problem. Intimate partner violence is real or threatened physical or sexual violence, or psychological and emotional abuse, directed at a current or former spouse or dating partner.

An abusive relationship often develops slowly and may not be obvious or easy to identify. Early signs may include extreme jealousy, controlling behavior, verbal threats, a history of violent reactions and verbal or emotional abuse.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is, these suggestions may help:

Make a safety plan. Identify areas in the house that are safe where you can go during an argument. Always keep your cell phone nearby and come up with signals you can use with trusted neighbors if you need them to call the police.

Get ready to leave. Use your free Employee Assistance Program (EAP) benefit to get connected to local shelters, support groups, legal resources and job skill trainings to become financially independent.

Leave as soon as possible. While there is danger in leaving, it’s also dangerous to stay with an abuser. Violence often becomes more frequent and severe over time.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home. If you or someone you love needs help, contact your EAP for free and confidential support.
