‘Shape Change’ diversity training with Pierce Freelon, Oct. 6

October 1, 2020 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Pierce Freelon will present “Shape Change” diversity training, a creative collaboration exploring dynamic communication and solidarity building through the arts, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Faculty will attend this diversity training as part of Faculty Professional Development Day and staff are also welcome to attend as schedules allow. Freelon is a professor, musician, and filmmaker and elements of this WokeShop have been shaped by his radical grassroots community work across four continents. Inspired by the words of science fiction writer Octavia Butler, “Shape Change” invites participants to foster empathy and co-create a better world. Freelon is a hip-hop and jazz musician, Emmy-Award winning producer, and director. He sits on the Durham City Council and is a former mayoral candidate. He also teaches at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and North Carolina Central University.

This session is enhanced with Otter.ai live captioning. Click on the drop-down icon next to the word “Live” at the top and select “View Stream on Otter.ai Live Transcript” or “Copy Streaming Link” (depending on how you are accessing Zoom). The “View” option, if available, will open another browser window. Resize that window and Zoom (exit full screen first if needed by clicking ESC on your keyboard) so that the two windows are side by side. If you only have the “Copy link” option or “View” doesn’t work, paste the copied link into a new tab on your browser and then resize that window and the Zoom screen to view the two side by side.
